Issue #5: The Art of UGC Upselling! 💫

5 strategies to elevate your UGC and boost your income

Hi there,

Wanna know how to maximize your efforts as a UGC creator?

The answer is yes, you do!! And here’s why…

Whether you’re obtaining clients by focusing on inbound work, individually pitching brands, automating your pitch process, or a mix of it all, there’s a certain amount of work time spent obtaining each client. Right?

Let’s say you charge $200 for a single UGC video. Well, imagine turning that into thousands of dollars from just one client!

This is where the magic of upselling comes into play. After all, it’s a more efficient use of your time to upsell an existing client than to find a brand-new one. Although, it’s still important to keep seeking connections with multiple brands and not put all your creative eggs in one basket, as it were.

Don’t worry, we’ll give you the scoop on exactly how to do this with the following…

5 Ways to Upsell a Brand 🎀

Read time: ~4 min

#1: Offer Usage Rights! 🎠

Usage rights are when a brand pays for the rights to use your content for a certain number of months. There are 2 types of usage rights:

Monthly - This tier is very popular for brands that are running ad campaigns. You determine your rates, but leading creators will use a simple equation to create their figure:

Base rate + 25% - 50% per additional month of usage (incl. the first month within our base rate) E.g., for 6 months of use, this would look like

$200 + (0.25x 200) x 5 =$450 for 6 months of usage for 1 video

Lifetime or perpetual - This is when you give a brand the full rights to use your content forever, as much as they would like. Some creators will charge 3 x their base rate per video, while others will charge a maximum of 12 months of usage. Be wary of what brands you give this to. You want it to be a brand with a solid reputation that you can see yourself standing behind.

#2: Create Upsell Packages! 🎁

When you offer upsell packages, you can give your clients a slight discount per video. You can also offer add-ons to sweeten the deal and make opting for one of your packages the clear choice. Below is an example of what you could charge based on a base rate of $200.

Package discounts

Add-ons

3 x videos: -10% = $540

Raw footage: 50% base rate = $100

5 x videos: -15% = $850

Additional hooks: $50 per hook

10 x videos: -20% = $1600

Additional CTAs: $50 per CTA

#3: Offer Script Reads! 📖

Sometimes, brands will have a script and footage created in-house and simply look for voice actors to read the script. Or perhaps share the script reading directly to the camera. In either case, there’s less creative work required on your part; you just show up and do your thing! Consider adding this to your list of services and discuss if you think it could be right for the brand.

#4: Add a Rush Fee! ⚡

In some cases, you may connect with a brand requesting a tight turnaround time. Many creatives will start with an additional 25% and go up from there, depending on how fast the brand wants the work. Ensure you effectively communicate this to the client before the work commences. Find the balance between being accommodating and maintaining boundaries.

#5: Pitch Regular Work! 📣

Having consistent income lined up is one of the beeeest feelings! Getting a UGC client on a 4/6/12-month retainer is a highly coveted thing in the UGC world. If you want to convert a 1-off client to monthly retainer work, try this:

  • Suggest a trial month before committing to a long-term agreement to see if it’s the right fit for both of you. Going from a 1-off to a retainer client can be a natural progression.

  • Get on the same page about the vision. This means getting on a call and learning what’s best for the brand. This also allows you to outline the pros, such as having someone be the face of the brand and trialing content variations to learn more about the audience.

  • Go above and beyond to provide exceptional work with every client. If they’re impressed, they will be more open to discussing retainer work. Or, at the very least, will have great things to say about you to other brands.

» Extra tips for success! ⭐

  • Film plenty of options and extra footage/variations

  • Watermark your content until it is approved and payment is made

  • Go for the upsell! Speak up, and let the brand know what you can do for them!
